MAKING THE CUT
Before cutting your cigar, try wetting the tip in your mouth. Make
sure you allow it to get just moist enough, but don't leave it in
too long. This is not meant to satisfy some sad, oral fixation that
may go back many years (which could require many more years of
therapy to overcome).
If you're shy about pre-tasting an unlit cigar, or if you are
suffering from dry-mouth, you can do what many people do, and dunk
your cigar into your brandy, or even your water glass. Though a
purist would probably tell you that wetting the cigar with your own
mouth is preferable.
While this part of the lighting-up ritual is by no means necessary,
it's a very good idea. Wetting the end of the cigar makes the
tobacco a bit more pliant, and it helps to ensure against cracking
when you go for the cut.
